What to avoid when naming your team
Naming your team is lots of fun, guaranteed to get some laughs. However, there are some things to be wary of when naming your work team:
- Mind what’s work-appropriate — your team name isn’t for your team’s eyes only. It’ll likely be seen by other members of the company as well. So, even if your team is okay with blurring the line of work-appropriate names, you should tread carefully in this territory. Even subtly alluding to something that’s not work-appropriate is still inappropriate.
- Don’t exclude your team from the naming process — you want your team to be attached to their name, like it, and stand by it by doing outstanding work. But if you exclude your team from the name-making process and give them a name they don’t like, they won’t feel as motivated to work in that team.
Our top 4 tips for naming your team at work
Making up so many team names can be exhausting, and after a team-naming brainstorming session, your team will probably feel that way too.
But, after coming up with so many names ourselves, we’re able to give you some great tips for naming your team.
Tip #1: Use inside jokes
Team names are unique to every team — that’s what makes them special. So, start with what it is about your team that stands out.
Inside jokes are a great option. Using an inside joke or a reference to a previous situation is endearing to everyone and shows that your team has shared some kind of bonding experience. Remember, a good name needs to reflect your team’s personality.
In your team’s first (or first few) meetings, see if there was anything of note that your team found super funny or interesting, or even found out they have in common. For example, a movie everyone likes or a hobby everyone enjoys. That’ll become the backbone of your team name.
For instance, if your team likes The X Files, you could call yourself “Team X”, “Call Mulder”, or something similar.
Likewise, if your team likes saying no in German as a funny bit (“nein”, pronounced as nine), you could call yourself — “Team 9”.
Or, if your team has frequent Agile meetings, for example, you can use a name that has links to Agile, like “Backlog Sweepers”.
Tip #2: Use wordplay
Everyone loves to hate puns. Your team will groan and complain jokingly but still love their name if wordplay is involved.
For example, if everyone in your team likes to paint as a hobby, a team name like “Brush It Off” would be perfect.
Or, if your team uses the Scrum methodology, you could use our name “Seasoned Scrummers”.
If you find it difficult to think of puns, don’t worry — wordplay doesn’t rely solely on them. You can just find a word that rhymes with another and slap them together.
For instance, if your team often jokes about using healing flasks from video games in order to stay productive at work, name them “Tasks From a Flask”.
As you can see, the first tip still applies — combine these 2 for the perfect effect.
Tip #3: Use a voting system or a hat pull
More often than not, your team will not be able to agree on a team name. So, you’ll have to find a way to decide.
There are 2 great methods to use here — a hat pull and a voting system.
A voting system feels the most just, as it’s literally a majority rule. Plus, it’s more likely that no one in your team will complain if a team name is voted for.
However, voting can result in a tie. If you choose one from a tie, it might feel biased or unfair, so the solution — fairness in unfairness — is to choose randomly.
Put all suggestions in a hat (or any object that can hold tiny pieces of paper) and randomly pull one from it. This way, the name is chosen purely by luck, and there are no hard feelings.
You can even turn this into a game as part of your team building activities.
Tip #4: Use a name generator
If push comes to shove, and you can’t think of any name for your team, you can always use a random name generator for your team.
If you missed it, we built one for you — right at the top of this article. We might be a bit biased, but it’s our favorite name generator out there.
However, if you want to check out more name generators, we also found D&D party name generators effective, as they often come up with some fun and adventurous names.
For example, with just one click, we got the names “Helping Hand”, “New Myths”, and “Blue Moons”. You can just scroll through enough clicks, and you’re sure to find a name you’ll like.
How to use Plaky to boost team collaboration
We already mentioned that collaboration and team morale issues can be fatal to your project — and that you can use team names to mend these problems.
But, if you just create a team name and never use it, your team will forget about it, and it’ll make no difference!
To make your team names stick, you need to incorporate it in your actual work! And that’s exactly what you can do in our project management software — Plaky.
Plaky allows you to work with the team as a whole, so it naturally fosters team collaboration. That said, to help your team connect further, you can give them a unique name in Plaky.
Once you have your teams all set, you can treat them as a single entity whenever you need to communicate updates or collaborate in real time.
Adding every single team member to a Plaky task, or mentioning everyone in a comment is just tedious. Instead, you can use the team name you’ve just created — everyone will be notified, and you’ll speed up the communication process.
Still, teams also need to collaborate internally — and with a team collaboration software like Plaky, they have plenty of features to do so.
Task-specific comments and @mentions give your team a space to communicate task-specific info. So, no one’s inbox will be unnecessarily cluttered, and the right people will always be notified.
Additionally, since it’s a real hassle to constantly ask fellow team members to share project-related files, all files in Plaky can be attached to their respective items.
Remember — all your team needs is an environment where collaboration comes naturally. With Plaky, they’ll find the perfect spot to work closely as a team and boast their name as they do it.
P.S. A huge thank you to our entire content team for contributing their ideas to this list!
Foster collaboration and keep your team’s morale high. Sign up for a free Plaky account today.
