If the project is to create a streaming service, then the project management side of things is tasked with making sure it functions (the menu navigation is smooth, the videos don\u2019t stutter, the suggestion algorithm functions properly, etc.). Project management does not concern itself with the streaming service\u2019s profitability or content library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The goal of product management is to fix the customers\u2019 problems<\/strong> by guiding <a href=\"https:\/\/plaky.com\/blog\/product-development-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">product development<\/a> in a way that improves user value. Among other things, product management advocates for new features, creates the product roadmap, handles marketing, and sets the subscription price. The goal of the service is to keep going.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for all products, but services best illustrate this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"projects-are-client-oriented-products-are-user-oriented\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Projects are client-oriented, products are user-oriented<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project management exists as a means of delivering to the client what they want<\/strong>. What the client wants, goes. In fact, there wouldn&#8217;t even be a project to manage in the first place if the client didn\u2019t need something. You can replace the word client with <a href=\"https:\/\/plaky.com\/learn\/project-management\/stakeholder-in-project-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stakeholders<\/a> in some cases, but the point stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>product management is customer- or user-focused<\/strong>. It exists to solve their problems. So, to measure the success of a streaming service, we might look at <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/vip\/key-streaming-metrics-investors-should-be-considering-1235435138\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">streaming-related KPIs<\/a> such as the total number of users, session duration, subscriber churn rate, or average revenue per user. Different products would require different KPIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have to reiterate that the goal of product management is to fix the customer\u2019s problems. Negative KPIs might lead companies to try and fix their own problems, for example, by increasing the price of a subscription due to low revenue. This would be bad product management since the customer doesn\u2019t care about your problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In such cases, the solution is usually to counterbalance the price increase with new features that provide value customers would be willing to pay extra for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"project-managers-hold-authority-product-managers-dont\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project managers hold authority, product managers don\u2019t<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It sounds preposterous that product managers don\u2019t have authority over product development \u2014 especially given how they\u2019re often called the CEOs of products \u2014 but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Product managers lack direct authority<\/strong> over the things needed to make the product a success, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>User and data research,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design and development,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sales and support, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiring and firing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if a product manager decided that adding a file preview feature to their SaaS app is beneficial, they couldn\u2019t just <em>make <\/em>the engineering team do it. Nobody reports directly to the product manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, product managers work inside a very limited system and need to use communication, vision, and influence to strike a balance between the wants of the CEO, the engineering team, and the customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, <strong>project managers have direct authority<\/strong> over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Project team member recruitment (not exactly hiring, but the closest thing to it),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/plaky.com\/blog\/project-management-budgeting-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Budgeting methods<\/a>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Task organization and assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, the project manager gets to decide who works on the project, who performs which tasks, and how they spend their budget.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They could make the project engineers implement the file preview feature if they wanted to. In small start-ups, this role consolidation often occurs because it is cheaper, but even in larger companies, this may be preferable for internal projects that don\u2019t have a fixed timeline and where quality is the top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dragana Nesic shared her experience on the subject. So I think it is important to define priorities and stay organized and focused.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So, taking on the workload of both roles at once may compromise some of the responsibilities that are expected from people in these positions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as demonstrated by Dragana, none of these problems are too much to handle, especially when you have a good team.
